Undergraduate Studies

 ADMISSION

IIM admits qualified students to the following undergraduate programmes .

  • BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery ) – Duration 6 years(Including 5 year Academic studies and 01 year Internship )
  • BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery ) – Duration 6 years(Including 5 year Academic studies and 01 year Internship )

student should possess the Certificate of G.C.E. (A/L) in Bio- science stream and should conform to the criteria recommended by the University Grants Commission for admission to the university.

A student who wishes to read the bachelor’s Degree should not suffer from any mental or physical disability that may hinder the duties of medical profession. Students are required to prove them selves as physically and mentally fit after a medical examination. The Institute will conduct this medical examination.

OVERVIEW OF SYLLABUS

The curriculum consists of Ayurveda Medicine and basic concept of Allopathic Medicine. In the syllabus basic, clinical and pre – clinical, para- clinical subjects are included.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

The medium of instruction of degree programme is Sinhala and English.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The degree programme is a six year, fulltime course. Main course is conducted over a period of five years at the Institute. After the successful completion of the examination of fifth year, one-year internship at the Ayurvedic Hospitals and with eminent traditional practitioners’ should be completed.

This Programme is liable to be amended from time to time. The decisions taken by the Senate of the Colombo University will be the final with regard to any such amendments, or any other problems arising in the implementation of the programme.

AWARD DEGREE

A degree will be awarded by the University of Colombo after the successful completion of internship B.A.M.S. (Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and surgery) for students.

ACADEMIC STAFF

Lectures, Tutorials, clinical, ward classes and Training sessions are conducted by competent academic possessing post graduate qualification in these respective disciplines, recognized and authorized by the senate of the University of Colombo.

BUMS CURRICULUM 2011

 

6th year (Periods of internship)

 

Each intern has to work in the hospital for nine months. He/She has to obtain training under a traditional physician in the specialized subject for three months. He/She must obtain a monthly progress report from his/her immediate superior, certifying the progress in all field, his/her application, the number of patients treated and their knowledge in the preparation of medicine.

At the end of their period of internship, they should produce a certificate issued by the commissioner stating he/she had successfully completed their internship to the director of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine.

If by any chance he/she is unable to complete his/her internship due to unavoidable circumstances, he/she should do so within a period of two years. If not their registration would be subject to cancellation.

Examination Schedule

 

IIM conducts two examinations per batch annually, which is annual and supplementary for the BAMS / BUMS. Only students who complete 75 % of attendance for lecturers and practicals are eligible to sit the annual examinations. Those who do not satisfy this requirement and the failures at the annual examination can sit the supplementary examination. Students are allowed only four attempts at each examination.

A student should sit for all sections wherever so prescribed in respect of written/ viva/ practical examinations The minimum number of marks for the pass level in each subject during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year shall be 50% marks for a pass in one section shall be at least 40 %. The minimum number of marks required for a pass in each subject in the 5th year shall be 50%, minimum marks for examination in section shall be 45%. 75 % and above in any subject will be considered a distinction.
